Mr. Aruga Joe Omokaro, the Editor-in-Chief of The Supreme, an online publication, has raised an alarm over threat to his life for publishing a story which reported that the governor of a South-south state was “in trouble over N610 billion.”
Mr. Omokaro said in a statement on November 14, 2012 “I wish to inform security agencies, National Assembly and the general public that my life is in danger. Since Sunday [November 11, 2012] night when we carried a story on our on-line Website www.supremeng.com, there have been suspicious movements of people around me.”
Emphasising that the story was in line with the mission of the publication, Mr. Omakaro said he had no reason to be worried for blowing the whistle on wrongful and fraudulent use of government resources “The mission of our newspaper is to fight crime and corruption through investigative reporting. And as such, we would unearth alleged financial misappropriation of the governor in our subsequent stories,” he said
According to him, while he waited to take a taxi to Ikeja Government Reservation Area (GRA) in Lagos on Tuesday, November 13, 2012 at about 3.30pm at Ikeja Bus Stop he had unusual encounters with two ladies. Mr. Omokaro explained that at the time, he did not suspect any security threat in their actions, saying what happened in his residence later that evening gave him a reason for concern over his life.
He said, “At about 8.25 p.m. there was a knock on my door. As a security precaution, I reduced the volume of my television, put off the lights in my sitting room and asked ‘who is there?’ There was no response. I asked again and a male voice answered, ‘I am looking for Evelyn.’ Then I asked again, ‘who are you?’ Instead of identifying himself, he said, ‘she is my colleague.’ Then I told him that there was no Evelyn in my flat.”
Mr. Omokaro noted that the intruder was not alone saying he heard the footsteps of more than one person climbing down his staircase. On inquiry from his neighbours, Mr. Omokaro said he was told that none of their families or visitors is called Evelyn.
