Access, an international human rights organization that defends and extends the digital rights of users at risk around the world, has announced that it is receiving applications for its 2014 Innovation Prize award

Brett Solomon, Executive Director Access

Access is seeking submission from applicants directly focused on the “endpoint security” needs of at-risk human rights defenders. It is looking for communication technology initiatives from across the world to address the issue of improving “endpoint security” of individuals and communities working in high-risk environments. “Endpoint security” aims to secure the device and software an individual uses to communicate online. In the same vein it seeks to make secure communications more usable for journalists, activists, and human rights defenders that require such security.

The winner of the award will be announced at RightsCon Silicon Valley, California in March 2014 and will go home with a prize of US$50,000.

The 2014 Access Innovation Prize is focused on improving projects that the endpoint security of at-risk users need. Applicants can submit a nearly complete project; improve existing tools, or something in-between.

Application Deadline is January 15, 2014 while the finalists will be announced in February.

According to Brett Solomon, the Executive Director of Access, he said: “By combining innovative policy, user engagement, and direct technical support, we fight for open and secure communications for all.”
