Writers from all over the globe are encouraged to apply for the Bitch Media 2020 Writing Fellowships in Sexual Politics, a three-month semester of intensive writing fellowships with the goal of developing, supporting, and amplifying emerging, diverse voices in feminist media.

Fellows will work with Bitch Media at one of four quarters: January 1 – March 30, April 1 – June 30, July 1 – September 30, or October 1 – December 31.

The Bitch Media Writing Fellowship was created in order to cultivate and amplify new voices and is directed by Bitch cofounder, Andi Zeisler.

Writers with minimal publication experience, passionate about sexual politics but do not have a history of writing or blogging about them, or who are still figuring out what subjects obsess them are all encouraged to apply.

It is not a full-time position, but an independent fellowship designed for writers who want to develop confident, well-rounded voices and are particularly interested in feminist criticism and mission-driven journalism and may be based anywhere in the world.

Applicants are encouraged to read the FAQs available at https://bitchmedia.org/article/faq-bitch-fellowships-writers before filling out the application. An applicant is to submit a cover letter of no more than 600 words that describes his/her interest in the fellowship area of his/her choice responding to the questions:

  • What are the topics you’re passionate about?
  • What are the facets and angles of this subject that you think are underreported and under-discussed elsewhere in the media?
  • What unique experiences and perspectives will you bring to the topic?

In addition, an applicant should also submit a CV (no more than 2 pages) that includes a list of any previous publications, if applicable; three (3) relevant writing samples and short answer questions to help Bitch get to know the applicant.

During the three-month fellowships, fellows will produce a minimum of six online articles for Bitch Media in the topic area of their fellowship. These pieces can take a variety of forms: reported, analytical, advocacy-focused, and even infographic.

Fellows will also produce at least one longform article to be published in the quarterly magazine Bitch: Feminist Response to Pop Culture. They will participate in biweekly discussions (by phone or Zoom if fellows cannot meet in person) with the fellowship director and other members of the Bitch Media staff, and receive mentorship and support in creating, shaping, and editing articles and online pieces.

They will also receive follow-up support with placing future articles and essays, and make great connections within the feminist-media community as well as receive a $2,000 stipend for the three-month fellowship.
