Call for Entries for 2014 Caine Prize for Africa Writing Award

Applications are invited from individuals who are nationals of an African country, were born in Africa or whose parents are African for the annual Caine Prize for Africa Writing. The winning prize will be awarded at a ceremony which will take place at Bodleian Library in Oxford on July 14, 2014. .

The winning author will take home the Caine Prize and a cash reward of £10,000. A travel award will be given to each of the short-listed candidates (up to five in all) as well as a Prize of £500.

The winner will be given the opportunity to take up a month’s residence at Georgetown University, as a Writer-in-Residence at the Lannan Center for Poetics and Social Practice.

Shortlisted candidates are selected from work originally published in the five years preceding the submission deadline and not previously considered for a Caine Prize.

Applications should be made by publishers, in the form of six original published copies of the work. For original work published in a magazine or journal, organisers will accept one original copy plus five photocopies, but would prefer six original copies.

The Prize’s Administrator, Dr Lizzy Attree said: “this latest development reflects the Caine Prize’s commitment to recognising the skills and artistry required to produce great fiction and rewarding writers appropriately for their work.” Every shortlisted story is also published in the annual Caine Prize anthology alongside twelve stories written at the annual workshop held in Africa.

The winner of 2013 Caine Prize, Tope Folarin, was announced in July 2013.

Deadline for Submission of applications is January 31, 2014.
