As part of a new era ushered in by the inauguration of a new board, the National Broadcasting Commission (NBC) held a two-day retreat August 1 and 2, 2018 in Uyo, the Akwa Ibom State Capital to discuss several aspects of Board-Management Relationships with a view to enhancing the work of the Commission.

Speaking at the event, the Director General of the Commission, Mr. Is’haq Modibbo Kawu, said the Board and management will look at several aspects of their relationships, the overlaps, the potential sources of tension and conflict, draw from the experiences of the resource people, and then have frank discourse to enrich their understanding of the work they would continue to do together

He recounted the experience of the few months since the inauguration of the board, saying the Commission entered a different phase of work when the Board was inaugurated. He said the Management of the NBC discovered that the terrain of work suddenly took a new shape as members began to deal with a new set of people, who come from diverse backgrounds and with different levels of experiences. This, he added, is like a form of culture shock for those used to working in a different way.

He expressed mixed feelings as well as fears that greeted the inauguration of the new board, noting that, notwithstanding, the management and the board have worked based on mutual respect, crediting it to the wealth of human relations experience of the board Chairman and the good gestures of the members.

He said over the past few months, the Commission worked with its new Board in a setting of mutual respect in spite of the underlining tensions. He added that there were expectations that members of the Board expect to be met and irritations they felt when things did not move at speeds they assume should be at the levels of their importance as members of the Board.

He noted that the Commission has been exceedingly lucky to have a Board Chairman with very rich resume of experiences which he said has helped to smoothen work between Management and Board in spite of stories, allegations and rumours from within the Commission that the board was inundated with

The Board members, he observed, have also been able to deploy their variety of experiences to a positive effect for which reason the NBC management can say that it has been lucky with the composition of the Board at the National Broadcasting Commission.
