Washington Fellowship for Young African Leaders Initiative Calls for Applications

The Washington Fellowship is now accepting submissions for the 2014 edition of Young African Leaders Initiative (YALI).  The Washington Fellowship which is the new flagship program of the President Barack Obama administration will bring over 500 African young leaders to the United States each year. Though launched in 2010, the programme is accepting its first applications for 2014 Fellowship.

The Fellowship creates a great platform for leadership training, academic coursework, and mentoring, and will create unique opportunities in Africa to put those new skills to practical use in propelling economic growth and prosperity and strengthening democratic institutions. The programme aims to support young African leaders as they spur growth and prosperity, strengthen democratic governance, and enhance peace and security across Africa.

The Fellowship which is based on merit is open to young African leaders who meet the set out criteria. Applicants must be between the ages of 25 and 35 at the time of submitting application, although exceptional applicants younger than 25 will be considered. Applicants must be proficient in reading, writing and speaking English and are eligible to receive a United State J-1 visa.

Application is open to the following countries: Angola, Benin, Botswana, Burkina Faso, Burundi, Cameroon, Cape Verde, Central African Republic, Chad, Comoros, Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC), Republic of the Congo, Cote d’Ivoire, Djibouti, Equatorial Guinea, Eritrea, Ethiopia, Gabon, and The Gambia

Other countries to which the application is open are Ghana, Guinea, Guinea-Bissau, Kenya, Lesotho, Liberia, Madagascar, Malawi, Mali, Mauritania, Mauritius, Mozambique, Namibia, Niger, Nigeria, Rwanda, Sao Tome and Principe, Senegal, Seychelles, Sierra Leone, Somalia, South Africa, South Sudan, Sudan, Swaziland, Tanzania, Togo, Uganda, Zambia, and Zimbabwe.

Application for the Washington Fellowship is available and must be filled online . Completed applications, including all supporting documents, are due by 12:00 midnight Eastern Standard Time on January 27, 2014.
